On 5 October 2026, Vista Health added £125 for contrast and Nuffield Health Leeds £152; other centres did not price it. Contrast is not for everyone, and a kidney-function check may come first. Every CT needs a referral, and the report is not always included. NHS England DM01, July 2026: 9.9% of CT waiters had waited six weeks or more.

Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, signs of a stroke, a head injury, or coughing up blood are not for this website or its form. Call 999.

  • Only Vista Health and Nuffield Health Leeds priced contrast on the pages we read on 5 October 2026. If a centre does not quote it, ask before you book.
  • Vista lists CT in Central London, Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead, Salford, Birmingham and Bristol.
  • Nuffield Health calls these guide prices; it gives a final price once your referral has been reviewed.

Each row is the centre's own published figure, read by Pete on 5 October 2026. We list rows in price order, not as a ranking. We do not average prices. A centre can change a price at any time; its own quote is what counts. We delete a row we cannot re-check. A listed centre is not a partner of ours. Full list on Sources.

What should you know before you ask for a CT?

This is not medical advice. We cannot tell you whether you need a CT scan. CT uses ionising radiation, so the law says every scan must be justified: a practitioner at the centre must decide the benefit outweighs the risk, using the details your referrer supplies (IR(ME)R 2017). No centre can promise a scan without that check, and a centre can say no. Some centres ask their own clinician to confirm the scan is appropriate. Many still want a letter from your GP or a specialist.

Insured scans need a referral and pre-authorisation from your insurer before you book. Contrast dye is often extra and is not for everyone. A centre may ask for a kidney-function blood test first, and you should tell it about allergies, kidney problems or diabetes medicine.

Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, signs of a stroke, a head injury, or coughing up blood are not for this website or its form. Call 999.

How do you get a private CT scan in four steps?

  1. Body area. Name the one area to be scanned. Each extra area usually costs more.
  2. Referral rule. Check who will refer you: your GP or specialist, or the centre's own clinician. Read referral.
  3. What the price includes. Ask whether the report, contrast and any consultation are in the price. See cost.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you. Use the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price with the centre.

How much does CT contrast cost privately?

On 5 October 2026, Vista Health listed an extra £125 if contrast is required. Nuffield Health Leeds listed additional contrast dye at £152 on top of its one-area guide price of £873, and a separate guide of £1,020 for one area with contrast. Scan.com, Queen Square Imaging Centre, Pall Mall Medical and Nuffield Health Warwickshire and Brighton did not price contrast on the pages we read. Ask for the full price, with contrast, in writing.

Who decides whether my CT needs contrast?

You do not choose it from a menu. Your referrer and the centre decide, depending on what the scan needs to show. The NHS says the dye can be given as a drink, injected into a vein, or put into your bottom. Some scans need none: Pall Mall Medical says a standard calcium score needs no injection or dye.

Who is contrast not suitable for?

Contrast is not for everyone. The NHS asks you to tell the hospital if you are pregnant or might be, are breastfeeding, take any medicines, have asthma, have kidney or thyroid problems, have diabetes, or have had an allergic reaction to contrast before. A centre may ask for a kidney-function blood test before it gives contrast, and it may say no.

What does contrast feel like, and what happens after?

The NHS says an injection can make you feel hot and flushed, give a metal taste in your mouth, or feel like you are peeing when you are not. You may be asked to wait for up to 30 minutes after the scan in case of a reaction. Reactions are rare. Tell the radiographer if you feel unwell.

Does contrast change the referral rule?

No. Every CT, with or without contrast, has to be justified by a practitioner using details from your referrer. Some centres use their own clinician; many want a GP or specialist letter. Read referral for each centre's rule and cost for the full price table.

How much extra is contrast for a private CT scan?

Vista Health lists £125 and Nuffield Health Leeds £152, checked 5 October 2026. The other centres we checked did not price contrast on their pages.

Can anyone have CT contrast dye?

No. Contrast is not for everyone. Tell the centre about pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines, asthma, kidney or thyroid problems, diabetes and any past reaction to contrast. A kidney-function test may be needed first.

How long do I wait after a CT with contrast?

The NHS says you may be asked to wait for up to 30 minutes after the scan in case you react to the dye.
